Steven D. Epps was born in Sumter, S.C., the oldest son of Douglas T. Epps, Jr. and Elizabeth (Betsy) C. Epps. He grew up in Spartanburg County.

Before receiving his Juris Doctor in 2004, Mr. Epps was an intern to United States Magistrate Judge Claude W. Hicks, a student member of the William Augustus Bootle Inn of Court, vice president of the Public Interest Law Society, and lead counsel of his ATLA Mock Trial Team.
